Unsafe is Safe

Recently our studio has been discussing the relationship between traffic and pedestrians and how the two can be handled on our site. The Netherlands have an impressive history of planning a hierarchal relationship between pedestrian, bicycle and automobile. The city of Drachten, Netherlands is taking a ‘less-is-more’ approach and removing the majority of their roadsigns. The belief is that by not ‘coddling’ to the motorist, he/she will in turn drive more carefully and be more apt to pay attention to the city unfolding around them.
